Advance Review: Helen of Wyndhorn #3
This is it. This is the issue where the promise of this series starts to become fully realized. Helen of Wyndhorn #3 is a game-changer, elevating the series to new heights of intrigue. Tom King's script goes deep into the fantastical world, finally revealing secrets that have been teased throughout the series’ first two issues. There is a shocking discovery about Helen's lineage that sends ripples throughout the narrative, raising the stakes for our protagonist. However, it does lead to many more questions that I can’t wait to explore!
The relationship between Helen and her grandfather takes center stage, and King's dialogue shines, capturing the warmth, wit, and complexity of their bond. The chemistry between the two characters is palpable, making their interactions a joy to read. King has created two strong, unique personalities that play off each other extremely well. Even Barnabas’ cold, steely exterior can’t keep him from being a character you end up loving.
One area that I’m still not sure how to respond to is the present-day activities that help to frame Helen’s story that King is telling. King is an expert enough storyteller that I don’t question he has plans for what’s happening here, but he’s kept the endgame very close to his chest. I both love and hate that I have no idea where this could go!
Bilquis Evely's art is once again a standout and it was the perfect choice to capture the ethereal quality of the worlds Helen discovers in this issue. Her wispy designs and delicate linework bring a sense of magic to every panel. You really feel like you’re falling into a fairy tale. Matheus Lopes' vibrant, yet muted colors beautifully complement Evely's style, adding a richness to the visuals that elevates them to even higher levels. With the story-within-a-story approach, Clayton Cowles' letters seamlessly guide the reader through the story, never getting in the way of the art.
If you haven't already, immerse yourself in this enchanting world and discover its secrets for yourself because it is well worth your time & investment!
