Advanced Review: ‘Destro’ #5

Dan Watters brings the Destro miniseries to a dramatic close with issue #5, a tense and action-packed finale that sets the stage for G.I. Joe #1 next month. Wasting no time, Watters picks up the pieces from the previous issue and hurtles the story toward a crescendo of chaos, as Destro, the Crimson Twins, and Cobra Commander engage in a final battle for dominance.

Watters' script had great pacing, keeping readers on the edge of their seat despite the relatively short time span covered in the main story. Destro still has plenty of tricks up his sleeve and Watters expertly weaves these plot threads together to create a sense of unease and uncertainty. The conclusion to this war leaves ominous shadow over the Energon Universe’s future. Watters also adds in a chilling callback to the Destro clan's past, a dastardly scene that gave me chills. It's a testament to Watters' skill that he can balance action, world-building, and character beats with ease.

Andrei Bressan's artwork is, once again, a highlight, showcasing the best of what the Energon Universe has to offer. His Hollywoodesque action sequences are breathtaking, with Adriano Lucas' colors and Rus Wooton's lettering bringing the fiery, loud impact of war to life in dramatic fashion. The visuals are stunning, with every panel packed with energy and intensity.

As the Destro miniseries comes to a close, Watters has further constructed the web of villainy that will have far-reaching consequences in the Energon Universe. Building on the foundation laid by Joshua Williamson's Cobra Commander miniseries, Watters leaves us with a terrifying presence that will undoubtedly cause trouble for our heroes in arcs to come.

Destro #5 is a fitting finale to this miniseries, and I'm eager to see how the events of this issue will shape the future of the Energon Universe. With G.I. Joe #1 just around the corner, the stage is set for an epic showdown between good and evil.
