Award-Winning ‘All-Negro Comics’ Gets New Edition With Bonus Content

Image Comics announced they will be releasing the Eisner Award-winning All-Negro Comics: America’s First Black Comic Book in a brand new trade paperback this November with a trove of bonus content included.

In addition to the digitally remastered work of Orrin C. Evans, George J. Evans Jr., John H.Terrell, William H. Smith, and Leonard Cooper from the initial 1947 work, this new edition, curated by writer/editor Chris Robinson, will feature essays and prose to help frame the historical and cultural impact of this work, a discussion guide for classroom educators, and new comics by today’s most popular Black comic creators.

Orrin C. Evans was awarded the ECBACC Pioneer Lifetime Achievement Award and inducted into the Will Eisner Award Hall of Fame long after his death for his contributions to the comic book community. He led the publication of the original 1947 book as a means of directly pushing back against harmful stereotypes and introducing Black characters who could entertain on their own.

“I’m so proud to finally bring this award-winning collection to the widest possible audience with the help of Image Comics," said Robinson. "How often do we get to spotlight a bonafide piece of American history like this?”

All-Negro Comics: America’s First Black Comic Book will be available in comic shops October 22nd and in book stores November 4th.
