A new Captain America volume will be debuting in September according to a press release from Marvel. This new series will see acclaimed writer J. Michael Straczynski, who previously helmed runs on Thor and Amazing Spider-Man, return to Marvel comics paired with artist Jesús Saíz to deliver a new adventure for Steve Rogers.

In an interview with io9, Straczynski noted, “Overall, the goal is to do some really challenging stories, some really fun stories, and get inside Steve’s head to see who he really is in ways that may not have been fully explored before. If folks like what I did with Peter in AMAZING SPIDER-MAN, and Thor in, well… THOR, then they should give this a shot, because I’m really swinging for the bleachers in this one!”

When asked about why he had Saíz at the top of his artist wishlist he revealed, “He was on my short list from day one, because so much of my work lives or dies by whether or not you can read emotion in the faces of the characters, and Jesús excels at that. He gets to explore the contemporary story with a lot of action, much of it of a supernatural origin, then go into a period look for the book as we follow Steve in New York in the late 1930s, so he gets to play with all the fun toys and show what he can do. So yeah…it’s a really great looking book.”

While Marvel is keeping specifics of the series’ close to their chest, they’ve shared a short tease:

Decades ago, Steve Rogers changed the world forever. Now powerful and insidious forces are assembling to ensure he never does it again. Past, present and future collide as the man out of time reckons with an existential threat determined to set the world on a darker path at any cost…

Captain America #1 hits shelves on September 20, 2023. Stay tuned for more updates at Derby Comics!
