NYCC’24 Recap: Marvel Comics’ Biggest Announcements

Over the past four days, I got to experience my first ever New York Comic Con and somehow it was as a member of the press! Hard work apparently does pay off and I was incredible honored and humbled to attend on behalf of Derby Comics.

I attended several of Marvel’s panels during my time at the event, including: Marvel Comics: Next Big Thing, Women of Marvel, & Marvel Comics: Spider-Man and his Venomous Friends. However, the publisher had a much larger presence at the event, so here’s a recap of some of the biggest reveals…

‘ULTIMATE WOLVERINE’ TO DEBUT JANUARY 2025

The next title in the Ultimate Universe, Ultimate Wolverine will be written by Chris Condon and drawn by Alessandro Cappuccio. Ahead of the series’ debut, a prelude story will be included in Ultimate Universe: One Year In this December.

“I’m bringing my essence of storytelling from That Texas Blood to the Marvel Universe with Wolverine, looking back at what came before and bringing us something new,” Condon said. “You might notice that there’s a Red Star on his costume and you might wonder why. If you look at that mask, there’s a muzzle on him, and that’s because he’s wild.”

‘RISE OF EMPEROR DOOM’ MINI WILL EXPLORE DOOM’S REIGN

While my initial reporting noted this would be nine issues, Marvel confirmed this will only be five-issues. Written by Ryan North and drawn by R.B. Silva, the story will show us the triumphs and trials of Doom’s rule and what happens to those who attempt to topple it.

North said, “[Doom] gets to show the world that he’s the greatest at what he does, and that might not be great for people not named Victor Von Doom.”

CHARLES SOULE & STEVE MCNIVEN REUNITE FOR ‘DAREDEVIL: COLD DAY IN HELL’

Set in a future on the brink of collapse, the series introduces a depowered Matt Murdock who is no longer Daredevil, but remains the Man without Fear. The three-issue limited series debuts April 2025.

"I know whatever idea I write is going to be executed masterfully by Steve, and that level of trust allows you to take a lot of risks," Soule said. "It’s been a really interesting process because the way we made it is something I wouldn’t do with an artist that I didn’t have this level of collaboration and trust with. We’ve been working on this book for four years, and that time has been well spent."

"I started out by going why are not more people learning from Frank [Miller] and the storytelling he does," McNiven said. "I was inspired by his work on Dark Knight Returns. To a certain degree, the structure of a 16 panel grid forces you to do different storytelling techniques."

‘WOMEN OF MARVEL’ ONE-SHOT TO RETURN IN FEBRUARY

Women of Marvel: She-Devils will spotlight street-level heroines as they break out of the shadows. Stephanie Phillips, Alison Sampson, & more will join the creative team for this special one-shot that hits shelves 2/26/25.

From Marvel: “When Shanna the She-Devil uncovers a dark conspiracy, she’ll call on international allies to put their fists, sai, katanas, and gauntlets together and stop a bomb before it can explode. It’s a who’s who of Marvel’s most fearless fighters as Elektra, Echo, Wolverine, and more band together to save the day!”

EDDIE BROCK WILL BECOME CARNAGE

Launching 2/12/25, Eddie Brock: Carnage will be written by Carles Soule and drawn by Jesús Saíz. The series will follow the events of Venom War and will interact with other titles, including Al Ewing’s upcoming All-New Venom series.

“Carnage is someone that has to kill, so Eddie has to feed him deaths. In order for Eddie to be okay with that, the people he feeds Carnage are serial killers,” Soule explained. "But Carnage is also an addict, and addicts need bigger and bigger highs…"

From Marvel: “He’s been Venom, he’s been Anti-Venom, he’s been the King in Black… Now, Eddie Brock has made his darkest bond yet as he joins with the one-and-only CARNAGE! Can he control his new other’s endless bloodlust? Or will he give himself over to madness and murder? Join Eddie and Carnage on a journey into the darkest parts of the Marvel Universe with bloody death as their only guide!”
