NYCC’24 Recap: DC’s Biggest Announcements

Over the past four days, I got to experience my first ever New York Comic Con and somehow it was as a member of the press! Hard work apparently does pay off and I was incredible honored and humbled to attend on behalf of Derby Comics.

I attended two of DC’s panels during my time at the event, DC’s Gotham City and DC’s Absolute/All In Universes. However, the publisher had a much larger presence at the event, including DC Studios & interactive booths, so here’s a recap of some of the biggest reveals across their full presence…

VERTIGO IS BACK

In what have been the most talked about news of NYCC 2024, DC Comics announced the return of the DC Vertigo imprint. The newly reminted imprint will house creator-owned properties with James Tynion IV’s The Nice House by the Sea being the debut title. Previous issues of the series will be retro-fitted with the new Vertigo logo and sent back to printing, while new issues going forward will release with the new logo. The publisher gave out NYCC exclusive issues of The Nice House by the Sea #1 with the new logo treatment to fans who attended their Jim Lee & Friends panel.

FIRST LOOK AT ABSOLUTE BATMOBILE #2 INTERIOR ART REVEALS THE NEW BATMOBILE IS HUUUUUGE

During DC’s Absolute/All In Universes panel, Scott Snyder and Nick Dragotta revealed a first look at images from Absolute Batman #2 which hits shelves November 13th. We got a first glimpse at the new Absolute Batmobile and it looks like an absolute BEAST!

Chatting with Dragotta in Artist Alley later in the weekend, he told me, “just wait until you see what it does in issue #3!” As if I wasn’t excited enough about this series!

NEW COMIC SERIES ANNOUNCED

The instant smash-hit Absolute Universe is set to expand in 2025 with Absolute Martian Manhunter from writer Deniz Camp and artist Javier Rodriguez. Camp said Martians in this world aren’t from Mars and that the book will be focus on an outsider’s perspective on the world. This world’s John Jones is an FBI agent who has his mind invaded by an alien consciousness. Camp said Rodriguez’s pitch for the alien was submitted via Play-Doh!

Back in the publisher’s main continuity, writer Jeremy Adams and artist John Timms will be teaming up for a new Aquaman solo ongoing next year. Adams revealed Aquaman will have a new set of powers as he battles kaijus and investigates issues related to “the Blue.” We’ll also see underwater characters we haven’t seen in a long time.

JIM LEE AND JEPH LOEB WILL REUNITE FOR HUSH 2

During his own panel, Jim Lee confirmed the online rumors which had been swirling for weeks. He and Jeph Loeb will be teaming up for a sequel to Batman: Hush coming in 2025. They also released merch which included the alternate name H2SH, which I really hope isn’t what the official name becomes because…no. November’s Justice League Unlimited #1 will include a prelude story to this next chapter.

The announcement also confirmed the arc’s first issue will begin with Batman #158, which likely means the end is near for current Batman scribe Chip Zdarsky. Where he goes next is still TBD.

NEW CREATURE COMMANDOS TRAILER

Cast members David Harbour, Sean Gunn, Alan Tudyk, Zoë Chao, Frank Grillo, Steve Agee, and Maria Balakova joined showrunner James Gunn on stage to talk about the upcoming animated series. Gunn noted that there will be some connections to DC Studios’ other shows, but that this series is it’s “own thing.”
