PREVIEW: Pavitr Prabhakar is Back in Spider-Man India #1

Spider-Man #1 Main Cover | Marvel Comics

Pavitr Prabhakar, a.k.a. Spider-Man India, has made appearances in subsequent comics, including crossovers with other Marvel characters. Though not as prominent as the mainstream Peter Parker version of Spider-Man, Spider-Man India has gained a dedicated fan following and has contributed to the global expansion and diversity of the Spider-Man franchise, especially on the heels of his appearance in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse. Building on this momentum, Pavitr will finally return to the comic pages when Spider-Man India #1 (of 4) hits shelves on June 14th!

He first debuted as Spider-Man India in the one-shot comic Spider-Man: India back in 2004, which was created by Indian filmmaker and writer Shekhar Kapur and illustrated by artist Mukesh Singh. In the story, Pavitr gains his spider-powers from an ancient Indian mystic, similar to how Peter Parker gained his abilities from a radioactive spider in the original Spider-Man story. He dons a unique Spider-Man suit that incorporates elements of traditional Indian attire and cultural symbolism.

While many core elements of the Spider-Man mythos remain intact, Spider-Man India's story often incorporates Indian mythology, cultural references, and local customs, giving it a distinct flavor. The character faces challenges and villains that are specific to the Indian setting while staying true to the core values of Spider-Man.
