Review: ‘Absolute Wonder Woman’ #2
Kelly Thompson follows up her killer debut issue script with a much more introspective look at Diana’s relationship with this universe’s Steve Trevor. We got some great character development as Diana literally stares down the US Military for standing in the way of public safety. It cemented this version of Diana as a warrior for good, a character staple no matter which universe she’s in. Thompson’s dialogue between Diana & Steve was so wholesome. I loved Diana explaining Pegasus’s history in such a direct, yet approachable manner. Diana’s new lasso is super interesting! Looking forward to seeing it used in action again & learning more about its abilities.
The art from Hayden Sherman and colors by Jordie Bellaire continue to be nothing short of sensational. Sherman’s designs for Diana’s battle with the Harbinger were awesome and Diana & Steve’s facial designs during the tender moments were spot on. Every panel with Diana looks like Greek art come to life. The Tetracide’s look was terrifying & reminded me a monsters from Thompson’s series The Cull. Bellaire’s use of red backgrounds for the scenes set in Hell really set the tone for that environment.
Unlike the guest issue, one thing I thought this issue didn’t do is give this universe’s differences a unique persuasive. It felt more like a “What If” WW was from Hell rather than Themyscira story than a wholly new retelling of the character the way Absolute Batman is handling Batman. However, that’s a point of personal preference & doesn’t take away from the phenomenal work the entire creative team is putting into this book. It’s wonderfully executed on all technical aspects & I can’t wait for more!
