Advance Review: ‘Beneath The Trees Where Nobody Sees: Rite of Spring’ #1
Patrick Horvath’s return to Woodbrook deftly expands the original series, introducing Monica Brewer, a new character who is the sister of Samantha’s victim from original series’ debut issue. Monica’s POV is expertly woven into the story’s established lore, setting the stage for a compelling new arc.
Horvath takes a bold leap by dedicating a significant portion establishing Monica’s character rather than returning immediately to Sam, and it’s a risk that pays off. Monica’s story is heartbreaking, as she’s forced to put her life on hold for years in pursuit of closure for her brother’s murder. Her adoption of a new, unfulfilling life makes her an immediate sympathetic and tragic central figure.
The issue’s climax is awkward and tense, leaving readers wondering if Samantha’s past will finally catch up to her or if she’s prepared to go further into the darkness. Horvath’s beautiful signature art style adds to the tension, delivering haunting visuals that perfectly capture the mood of every panel. Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou’sletters effortlessly bring Horvath’s script to life.
Rite of Spring #1 is an emotional and haunting success which builds on the original series perfectly. Horvath’s visual storytelling makes this a must-pull for fans of the original series and new readers alike. The stage is set for a thrilling new chapter, and it’s clear that Horvath is poised to take the story in an even darker and captivating direction.
