Review: Nightwing #115
Written by Tom Taylor and brought to life by the talented creative team of Bruno Redondo on art, Adriano Lucas on colors, and Wes Abbott lettering, Nightwing #155 is the second chapter in the ‘Fallen Grayson’ arc that will round out Taylor’s run with Dick Grayson. Unfortunately, the issue falls short of expectations as Heartless continues to be a less-than-exciting choice as Dick’s final boss.
After a slow debut issue to the arc, one of the bigger letdowns this week is how little happens again. Heartless and Zucco’s plan for revenge on Dick felt overly simplistic and something that’s happened to any good hero — they want to frame him. It all unfolded too easily, with Dick, Barbara, & Bruce getting played like fiddles. It's a shame, as Dick’s Nightwing has been built up as one of DC's top heroes, and Batman is, well, Batman. Yet, they're both caught off guard in a way that feels forced and uncharacteristic for two of the best.
Redondo's line work is always a pleasure to read, bringing a sense of energy and movement to every panel. Lucas' colors are equally impressive, adding depth to the visuals. The combination of their styles creates a vibrancy to the book that draws you in. One of standout moments in the issue is the depiction of Dick's hallucinatory state, which is rendered in a dreamlike, surreal style. The artwork is so effective that it elevates the storytelling, making even the most mundane moments feel more compelling. The lettering by Wes Abbott is also noteworthy, adding a clear and concise touch to the narrative.
While the ‘Fallen Grayson’ arc has quite hooked me yet, Taylor has shown that he knows how to write Dick Grayson and I’m willing to wait until this plot kicks into high gear to cap off his acclaimed run on the character.
