Review: ‘Ultimate Spider-Man’ #14

Jonathan Hickman is giving us some of the best work of his career AND the best Spider-Man in a LOOONG time.

This was a thrilling, psychological game of cat-and-mouse between Peter, Harry, and Kraven. Hickman has used this recent arc to push Peter to his limit, which we start to see here. I was NOT expecting that death whatsoever. I audibly gasped when I flipped to the reveal page.

I’m really intrigued by whatever plans Mole Man and Mysterio have for themselves. It feels like a power play against Kraven, but could it be more?? And I can’t forget the really fun scenes with Richard and Felicia. They had great chemistry together and their convo set up a fate vs owning your destiny story that I’m excited to see play out.

I don’t know how, but Marco Checchetto gets better with every issue. Everything in the Savage Land scenes looked amazing. And his action sequences, including the close up of Kraven using a handheld Gatling, were kinetic and emphatic. Matt Wilson used a wide-ranging palette to beautifully bring it all to life.
