Dan Slott’s ‘Superior Spider-Man’ Return Confirmed by Marvel

Superior-Spider Man #1 (2013) Main Cover | Marvel Comics

Capitalizing on the ferver sweeping fans after the smashing success of Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, Marvel announced the return of original writer Dan Slott for a third installment of the Superior Spider-Man series. The exact timing of the new volume is still unknown, but we’ll be sure to keep you updated once Marvel provides more details.

The first volume of Superior Spider-Man debuted in January 2013 and ran for 33 issues. It marked the beginning of a new chapter in the Spider-Man mythology, introducing readers to the concept of Otto Octavius taking over as Spider-Man. Dan Slott, known for his long run on The Amazing Spider-Man, served as the writer for the series. At launch, Ryan Stegman provided the artwork, with Livesay serving as the inker. Edgar Delgado contributed to the colors, bringing the pages to life, while Chris Eliopoulos handled the lettering duties.

In a unique twist, Otto Octavius, who was dying due to his failing body, managed to transfer his consciousness into Peter Parker's body, effectively taking over as Spider-Man. Initially, Octavius relished his newfound power and sought to prove that he could be a superior Spider-Man (hence the title) by implementing a more brutal and strategic approach to crime-fighting.

Under Octavius' control, Spider-Man became more ruthless and willing to cross ethical boundaries, utilizing technology and intelligence to defeat his enemies. However, Octavius soon realized that being a hero wasn’t as straightforward as he initially believed. As he continued his journey as Spider-Man, he faced moral dilemmas, clashed with familiar allies and enemies, and struggled to maintain control over Peter Parker's life.

The series was brought back in December 2018 with a new creative team, lead by writer Christos Gage and ran for 12 issues. While less popular and well received as the first series, this second series ended with Octavius making a deal with Mephisto to restore himself back to his original, healthy body — giving up the Spider-Man mantle and all the memories and knowledge of what he had done.

How will Dan Slott and team pick up the pieces from this ending? We’ll have to wait and see!
