After countless internet rumors and speculation over the past few months, James Gunn has finally settled on his leads for Superman: Legacy. Per multiple sources, including The Hollywood Report and Deadline, Gunn and DC Studios co-chair Peter Safran have chosen David Corenswet and Rachel Brosnahan to star as Clark Kent and Lois Lane in the upcoming film. Gunn, who will also direct the movie, confirmed the reports in a tweet.

The reports note that Corenswet and Brosnahan were selected after final screen-tests that occurred over the June 17th weekend and included the actors dressing up in full makeup and costumes. Corenswet beat out fellow finalists Nicholas Hoult and Tom Brittney for the role of Superman, while Brosnahan beat out Emma Mackey and Phoebe Dynevor for the role of Lois.

Superman:Legacy to Launch the New DC Universe

Superman: Legacy is set to be released on July 11, 2025 and it will be the first film in the brand-new DC Universe led by Gunn and Safran. It will kickoff the first half of the universe’s story, called “Chapter One: Gods and Monsters,” and is tentatively slated to include the following films: Superman: Legacy, The Authority, Batman: The Brave and the Bold, Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow and Swamp Thing. It will also include both animated and live-action TV, including: Creature Commandos, Waller, Lanterns, Paradise Lost and Booster Gold.

When Will the Next Cast Names be Announced?

With filming expected to begin sometime early next year, additional casting announcements will likely begin to come out now that the film’s stars have been selected though no official timeframes have been announced beyond. Fans are now laser-set on figuring out who will be cast as Superman’s most famous adversary, Lex Luthor. In a separate report by The Hollywood Reporter, it’s rumored that both Bill and Alexander Skarsgard are on Gunn’s shortlist for the role. There is also a chance that Hoult could re-enter the casting conversation for the role of Luthor, though it’s assumed that decision is likely up to Hoult himself.

In addition to Lex Luthor, there are additional casting decisions that will likely cause rumors to swirl. Jimmy Olsen, the Daily Planet coworker and friend to Clark Kent and Lois Lane, and members of The Authority, who Gunn has mentioned will appear in this film before their own film later in Chapter One.
