‘They Choose Violence’ #2 is Unapologetic and Unflinching

They Choose Violence #2 continues to tackle serious societal issues with unflinching brutality, refusing to shy away from the harsh realities of racism, bigotry, and corrupt government systems. The series' bold approach presents a world where the main characters' hyperbolic, gruesome hyper-vigilanteism is juxtaposed with the absurdity of our own current everyday reality.

This issue begins to explore some of the main characters' thought processes, with Karen taking center stage and offering a unique perspective on their decisions. The dynamic between Laneka, Deidre, and Karen doesn’t feel completely fleshed out as the story has primarily focused on the main characters’ actions. And by the end of this issue, we see that their actions are starting to catch up with them, creating new and unintended problems that raise the stakes in a major way.

While the story is an enjoyable form of escapism from my own frustrations with the state of our world, the execution can be rough around the edges. The pacing feels rushed, with plot points and character beats whizzing by at a breakneck speed. And as I mentioned earlier, the main characters could benefit from more development and characterization to make them feel more fully realized.

Despite these drawbacks, They Choose Violence #2 is a gripping read. The series' unapologetic approach to tackling tough issues can be therapeutc.. With some refinement in pacing and characterization, this series has the potential to be truly exceptional. For now, it's a compelling and unsettling ride that's worth checking out.
