Dark Horse and Mattel Are Heading Back to Eternia With ‘Masters of the Universe: Genesis’

Dark Horse Comics and Mattel announced Masters of the Universe: Genesis, a twelve-issue series exploring the origins of Eternia's most iconic heroes and villains. The first issue arrives August 5, 2026, priced at $4.99. The opening three-issue arc is written by Rich Douek with art by Gavin Smith, colors by Fabi Marques, and letters by AndWorld Design.

Issue #1 kicks things off with a deep dive into Skeletor's backstory, tracing his rise as a power-hungry sorcerer with his sights set on Castle Grayskull and control of Eternia. Covers for issue #1 are by Mark Buckingham, with a variant by Lee Bermejo. Future arcs will bring in a rotating roster of writers including Cavan Scott, Nick Roche, John Harris Dunning, Giovanna La Pietra, and Tiffany Smith.
