Everything We Know So Far About Trinity, Wonder Woman’s Daughter
As mentioned in my review, Wonder Woman #800 features one of the most hotly anticipated debuts of the year — Wonder Woman’s daughter, Trinity. The character was introduced by a short story written by Tom King, who will be taking over writing duties for the series with Wonder Woman #1 (LGY #801) in the Fall. More of Trinity’s backstory will be explored in King’s run, but let’s take a look at what we know based on this issue.
What’s Trinity’s full name?
While Damian Wayne and Jon Kent refer to her as ‘Lizzie’ for the initial part of the story, Trinity reveals later on that her full name is Elizabeth Marston Prince. This is a rather direct reference from King to Elizabeth Holloway Marston, the wife of William Moulton Marston, who helped co-create the Wonder Woman character. Elizabeth, and their life partner, Olive Byrne, are credited as being William’s inspiration for the character's appearance. A strong advocate for women's rights, he believed that Wonder Woman could be a role model for young girls and a symbol of female empowerment. It wouldn’t be shocked to see King pay special attention to ensure Trinity continues to embody these qualities.
How did she get the nickname Trinity?
There are quite a few nods to trios in this short story, including the three characters we follow (Lizzie, Damian, and Jon), the three titles Trinity references for herself, and the three trials the characters must face. However, the trio that gives her the name Trinity are the three ‘Lassos of Fate’ she holds. In one panel, we’re able to see her equipped with all three: her mother’s Golden Lasso of Truth, the black lasso she uses against a spirit pretending to be her mother at the end of her trial, and a third grey/silver lasso that has yet to be revealed.
How did Trinity meet Damien Wayne/Batman and Jon Kent/Superman?
We’re likely going to get more back story in future issues, but Jon reminds Damian that they have been watching over Trinity since a young age. From the sounds of it, she may have been under the supervision of Bruce Wayne at some point as Jon revealed that it was Damian’s father who told them (six times) to babysit her instead of taking her on adventures. Jon even took Trinity with him in one of his battles against Killer Croc when she was only 5! These three clearly have a long history together and have developed a very familial bond with each other. They argue and joke as though they’re siblings and Trinity even calls them “family.” I’m very interested to see how this relationship progresses and if we start to see the trio together across multiple titles once Trinity is more established.
Who is Trinity’s father?
This major question wasn’t answered here but it appears to be the basis for one of the first major storylines of King’s upcoming runs. The short story in this issue ends with Trinity confronting a mysterious prisoner who appears to be an ex-king of some sort. While trying to play mind games with Trinity, he reveals that he knows her past and is willing to tell the story.
