Cage was supposed to play the role of Superman in Superman Lives in the late 1990s. The movie was to be directed by Tim Burton and written by Kevin Smith. However, the movie was never made due to budget constraints and creative differences and Cage’s Superman credits now only include this lone cameo.

In the Rolling Stone article, Dan Mora, the cover’s artist, spoke about Cage, “I grew up watching Nic Cage's movies and am a big fan of his. I was excited that he finally got a chance to play Superman in The Flash and I did my best to pay tribute to him in that role. Nic is a great actor that injects so much energy into his roles. You can't help but imagine what his Superman would be like.”
