Review: ‘Monkey Meat: The Summer Batch’ #4

Juni Ba’s anthology has always done an amazing job providing social critique & this issue is no exception. Both of this week’s tales are infused with satirical humor that provide a reading experience that’s unnerving yet exhilarating.

The stories in this issue tackle the real-world problems of parasitic over-tourism & influencer delusion. Ba’s commentary is timely, cutting deep into serious topics w/ a wicked sense of humor & a keen eye for absurdity. While both stories in this issue are gems, the second one stood out for me most. Ba’s skewering of influencer culture is LOL funny & utterly cringe-worthy, as we all know an influencer or two (or more) who could have starred in this story.

But what always truly sets Ba’s stories apart is the dynamic artwork. Rich w/ visual symbolism, each panel is a feast for the eyes, drawing you deeper into the world of Monkey Meat Island. It’s a shame we only have one issue left, but I sure hope there’s more Monkey Meat stories to tell down the road!
