The final issue of Daniel Warren Johnson’s captivating series left me feeling so many emotions. For those who haven’t been following along, the story has followed Sam & Duncan, parents of 6-year-old Penny who has been kidnapped by a mysterious force inside her own dreams. Determined to rescue her, the parents have embarked on perilous journey, joining forces with magical beings & facing unimaginable challenges, & choices, along the way.

Even after 9 thrilling issues, Johnson somehow saved the best for last. This finale is a masterclass in storytelling, flipping the script on the narrative & giving us a glimpse into Penny’s perspective after being MIA for so long. The result is a gut-wrenching, but inspiring final chapter that rewards readers for investing in the full narrative & giving our main characters a satisfying ending.

The dialogue is full of raw emotion with Penny pulling at readers’ heartstrings like a puppeteer. Johnson’s writing is a testament to the transformative power of a child’s imagination and emotional healing, and this issue serves as a poignant codo to the series’ themes he’s developed all along.

Visually, Riley Rossmo & Mike Spicer outdo themselves, delivering mesmerizing compositions that elevate the climactic action scenes. Spicer introduces a new color palette for a pivotal scene, perfectly capturing the tone and tension of the moment. Shawn Lee’s letters are the icing on the cake, amplifying the “ depth of each panel & cementing the issue’s emotional impact.

This was a beautiful conclusion to what has been an amazing story, expertly balancing action, drama, &, best of all, heart. Johnson’s storytelling is both haunting & hopeful, leaving a lasting impression on me.
