Review: ‘The Ultimates’ #10

I don’t know how long prior to it’s release Deniz Camp scripted this issue, but it felt all too relevant given the state of our country right now. I can’t say this enough — Nazis f*cking s*ck! MAGAs, oops I mean the Red Skulls, recruit based on gilded displays of strength (poor Namor) and their cartoonish evilness (that giant Red Skull helmet) masks how inferior they really are. But what do the alternatives to fascism offer? That’s a central question Camp presents for the Ultimates here and is a broader question for how we reclaim democracy in America.

If I had one complaint about this series, it’s that recent issues feel very “mission-of-the-week” rather than building upon on another. However, this week’s mission was SO awesome thanks to the amazing talents of Juan Frigeri, Federico Blee, & Travis Lanham. The action sequences were awesome, especially seeing Ant-Man pop out of someone’s mouth and Cap effortlessly bouncing his shield off a bunch of bigots.

The panel with TVs showing scenes from other Ultimate titles was a great touch. There’s been very limited cross-over elements for this new Universe, so the nod to what else is happening helps to world-build without needing to deploy an unnecessary cross-title event.

Overall this was another great issue in one of Marvel’s best series! Did you pick this one up? Let me know what you thought!
