In Wonder Woman #37, Steve Trevor and his daughter Trinity land in the present after losing to the Matriarch in a future set 20 years from now. The two have to track down Wonder Woman and convince her that a child who seems harmless now will grow into a serious threat, with the chapter hinging on whether they can make her believe them.
The annual runs parallel to that story. Following the events of Wonder Woman #34, the Matriarch has to claw her way out of Hell to return to the living and stop Steve and Trinity from altering the past. Standing between her and the surface is a river of fire carrying the souls of every hero and villain she has killed.
"In the Matriarch Special, Leah and I are exploring a single motif: conviction versus doubt," said Stephanie Williams. "The Fates take Lyssa's Green Lantern ring and send her alone onto the Phlegethon, the River of Fire she was warned about as a girl. This leaves her isolated, compelled to confront her own fears and uncertainties. We're intentionally paralleling the events of 'The Wonder War Act 2' that begins earlier in September. While Tom and Dani fight the external war in Wonder Woman #37, Eduardo, Belén, Leah and I are following Lyssa's internal struggle after she chooses fate over freedom."
