Netflix to Adapt Vault Comics’ ‘Barbaric’

Vault Comics announced that Netflix will adapt Barbaric, the axe-cellent comic series co-created by writer Michael Moreci and artist Nathan Gooden, as a new episodic series. Academy Award nominee Sheldon Turner (Up in the Air, X-Men: First Class) will co-showrun and write alongside Robert Rovner, best known for his work on the CW series Supergirl. Executive producers include Jennifer Klein, Barry Jossen and Tana Jamieson for A+E Studios, Javier Grillo-Marxuach (Lost, The Witcher), F.J. DeSanto and Damian Wassel for Vault Comics, and actor Sam Claflin (Me Before You, Peaky Blinders) via Soft Claw Productions.

Barbaric debuted in 2021 and is currently in its fifth volume. The series follows Owen, a barbarian cursed to do good, and Axe, his foul-mouthed, blood-craving weapon.

"Barbaric has been the mainstay of fantasy comic books for the last six years," said Vault Editor-in-Chief Adrian Wassel. "The first issue came out at a time when everyone said fantasy comics were dead and it changed the entire industry's mind. Now, as Owen and Axe take to the screen, even more people get to see why Barbaric is the most important sword and sorcery series since Conan."

"We've got a dream team putting this project together, and I couldn't be happier — especially since Barbaric fans are the best fans in the world, and I know how much they're going to love seeing this story brought to life in such a major way," said Moreci. "This is going to be an exciting ride."

Barbaric Volume One: Murderable Offenses is available now.
